We use and hire Allen & Heath's excellent T112 addition to their iLive digital sound mixing desk range. The T112 desk has 28 channel strips assignable over 4 'layers', providing up to 112 channel strips. The desk is available from Mainline with an iDR48 Mixrack - this replaces a conventional stagebox. The iDR48 provides the majority of the system inputs and outputs, and centralised effects signal processing.

A set of inputs and outputs are also available at the T112 desk. These can be used for your favourite analogue outboard effects unit (if really required?), background music CD player, iPod, etc.

One of the great advantages of digital desks over analogue is saving and recalling settings: prepare and save an entire show configuration, then and save and recall 'scene' settings for each band or act. No need for a separate desk or complete re-patching between support band and main act.

Some of the iLive T112 mixing desk features at a glance:

  • up to 64 system inputs
  • up to 32 system outputs
  • 28 fully assignable channel strips over 4 layers
in 3 banks, giving 112 channel strips total
  • 8 stereo effects buses in a virtual effects 'rack'
(it even looks like a 19" rack on screen!)
  • 3 dynamic effects, parametric EQ (PEQ), high-pass
filter (HPF) and delay on all 64 inputs
  • "digital snake" network cable links desk and
    Mixrack stagebox
  • custom naming and colour keying of all channel strips
  • touch-screen for graphical interface and ease of control
  • notebook / laptop editor software to assist setup
    and operation
  • notebook / laptop can run an independent mix
with or without the mixing desk
  • adjust the mix around the venue using a wireless notebook
or on an iPad using the iLive MixPad app.

Another great advantage over analogue and even some higher-end digital desks: the mixing desk and Mixrack are connected using a 'digital snake', a simple CAT5 network data cable. This enables a faster setup, faster load out, and reduces costs with no need for any heavy multicore conventional 'snake' cables. A notebook computer running iLive Editor can be used to supplement the mixing desk surface, and assist setup. Alternatively (or in addition) connect a notebook PC to the iDR48 Mixrack using standard networking (CAT5) cable. By adding a standard wireless network router to the iDR48 Mixrack, a notebook PC can be connected wirelessly. We have used both methods very successfully at smaller events where there is literally no room to take in a mixing desk, but big desk features are still needed. Massive on-board dynamic controls, effects capabilities and flexibility, but without an actual mixing desk in place!

February 2011 update: the MixPad app for Apple's iPad is now available to hire from Mainline. iMix is a slimmed-down version of the iLive Editor PC / Mac / Linux application, and designed to supplement an iLive system with or without an iLive Editor PC in place. The iPad connects to an iLive system easily via a dedicated wireless network. This powerful and versatile app. provides an intuitive walk/talk/listen facility to adjust all aspects of the mix from wherever you need to be in the venue.
